Overview of Tamang Heritage Trail – 7 Days

Get to know the Tamang people firsthand on this easy seven-day journey just north of Kathmandu Valley in Nepal, all the while trekking through verdant valleys and past snow-capped mountains. A further advantage of the Tamang Heritage Trail is that it will support the local economy in a sustainable way.

The Tamang Heritage Trail, which is located north of the Kathmandu Valley, is conceivably the most easily accessible hiking area in Nepal. You may see some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the nation here, including terraced green farms, dense forests, and the Langtang Himalayas’ peaks, which are not far from the Tibetan border. The opportunity to stroll through Tamang villages is an extra benefit to the natural beauty.

The Tamang people first arrived in Nepal’s mountainous regions several hundred years ago as horse traders from Tibet, usually not far from the Kathmandu Valley. They still have their own language and a unique identity with Tibetan roots. They have long been among Nepal’s most disenfranchised ethnic groups. They unfortunately suffered the most following the 2015 earthquake because many of their homes were in remote, vulnerable places that were shut off from aid. The Tamang population in this region benefits from tourism by providing a source of income.

Itinerary of Tamang Heritage Trail – 7 Days

01
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Settle in after your flight and get a feel for this amazing city full of temples, people and buzz.

02
Day 2: Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Early departure from Kathmandu is advised for the seven-hour trip to the Langtang Valley’s entrance. Even though the Tamang Heritage Trail isn’t too far from Kathmandu, the road is hilly, meandering, and climbs high, giving us wonderful panoramic views of the Annapurnas, Manaslu, Ganesh Himal, and the peaks of the Langtang region. The route then descends to the valley of the Trisuli River, which it subsequently follows for the most of the day’s trip.

03
Day 3: Syabrubesi trek to Gatlang (approx. 5.5 hours)

The usual starting point for both the Gosainkund and the Langtang Valley treks is Syabrubesi, but instead of going in those directions, climb a view point for an hour and a half for a breathtaking view of the Goljang Valley, the Gosainkund mountain, and the Ganesh Himal. After a one-hour trek, proceed to the Goljang Valley and halt for lunch there. Trek for around three hours to get to the lovely Tamang village of Gatlang in the afternoon.

04
Day 4: Gatlang to Tatopani (approx. 7 hours)

The descent to Thangbuchet, by a wonderful river, marks the start of today’s hike. After lunch, the trail starts to climb once again, passing over a hanging bridge and up to Tatopani, where you will spend the night. There are towns with this name all over Nepal; the name of the town literally translates to “hot water” in Nepali. Naturally occurring hot springs with water that rises directly from the ground are available here for your enjoyment. The waters are said to have a healing nature by the locals, and they will undoubtedly relieve any discomfort after the hike.

05
Day 5: Tatopani to Thuman (approx. 4 hours)

The route climbs today to Nagthali Danda (3,300 m/ 10,826 ft), a high, open grassland with breathtaking Himalayan vistas. Take a break for lunch at the charming Brimdang village before continuing on to Nagthali Danda. When you arrive, pause for the gompa’s caretaker’s masala chiya (tea). Then proceed to Thuman, a Tamang village with amiable residents who enjoy singing and dancing. Maybe even invite you to participate!

06
Day 6: Thuman to Briddim (approx. 5 hours)

Our hike today starts out on a flatter portion of the trail before descending to Timure. It partially follows the former trade route to Tibet, which is actually only a three-hour walk away. Nowadays, though, it is impossible to cross the border on foot, and there are numerous police officers stationed along the routes in this region. The walk continues to Briddim, another Tamang town, after lunch, where you’ll stay in a local family’s home for a really distinctive experience. You may be confident that your stay will benefit the entire community and not just one or two enterprising families (as is sometimes the case with hotels and resorts) because all housing and food is provided at neighborhood homes on a rotating basis.

07
Day 7: Briddim trek to Syabrubesi (approx. 3 hours)

Today’s three-hour stroll back to Syabrubesi is simple. There, have lunch, and then unwind or explore in the late afternoon. Syabrubesi is a small village with a few businesses that sell regional handicrafts manufactured by women, like vibrant aprons and shawls made in the regional fashion.

08
Day 8: Return to Kathmandu

As you return to Kathmandu, take in the mountain landscape.

09
Day 9: Return to Kathmandu

Bid adieu to Nepal and its beautiful people, mountains, and environment. Until we speak again!

Essential Information - Tamang Heritage Trail – 7 Days

Variations

You can combine the Gosainkund and/or Langtang Valley treks with the Tamang Heritage Trail. Instead of going back from Briddim to Syabrubesi for the Langtang Valley trek, keep going to the Lama Hotel. You enter the valley through this and travel on to the Kyanjin Gompa at the valley’s end. From a broad valley, this trip offers breathtaking, vast views of the Langtang Himalayas. Backtrack and stop at Thulo Syabru and Syabrubesi on the way back. The expedition would be extended by three to four days as a result.

Another great (albeit more difficult) trip in this region is the Gosainkund trip, which is frequently paired with the Langtang Valley Trek and can thus be added to the Tamang Heritage Trail for a longer adventure. Due to Lake Gosainkund’s elevation (4,379 m/14,370 ft), the ascent up to it should only be undertaken on the way back from Langtang, not on the way, in order to promote acclimatization. The Gosainkunda journey will take an additional three days.

Food and Accommodation

The majority of the lodging along the Tamang Heritage Trail will be found in modest, neighborhood teahouses, which offer a warm, comfortable bed and wholesome, substantial food. Stay in a local homestay in Briddim, which will also provide comfortable standards but can be a little simpler.

Similar to other areas of Nepal, the Tamang Heritage Trail’s cuisine heavily relies on rice, lentils, and vegetable curries. The momos in this region are often a little different from what you might have had in Kathmandu. Momos are larger pies that resemble British pasties or Latin American empanadas more than the little, bite-sized dumplings that are typically served in this region. Try dhendo as well, a common dish and rice substitute in many Nepalese communities. It is made of cooked, mashed-up maize flour that resembles refried beans but tastes very different.

Best season

The Tamang Heritage Trail is best traveled during the spring (March–May) and fall (September–November), as is true of most of Nepal. This walk is also cozy for the winter because the heights aren’t particularly high, and the views are probably wonderful at this time of year. Bring only layers that are warm.

Traveling there and back

This hike can only be started by traveling overland from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi. Every day, crowded public buses travel the route, but they take a lot longer than necessary because they regularly stop to pick up passengers (and deliveries) along the way. Alternatively, there are daily bus service from Syabrubesi to Dhunche, from which you can take a private or public link to complete the journey. However, a private four-wheel drive is significantly more comfortable.
