Overview of Annapurna Circuit Trek

The Annapurna Circuit Trek is a 14 day journey through changing Himalayan landscapes, traditional mountain villages, and the famous Thorong La Pass. The path goes round the Annapurna Massif, starting in the green Marsyangdi Valley, then ascending to the alpine area and eventually down to the parched Mustang. You will get to enjoy the unique culture of the Gurung, Manangi and Thakali people as well as views of some of the highest mountain ranges in Nepal.

The trip begins with a beautiful road trip of Kathmandu to Jagat and then proceeds on traditional trekking paths along Dharapani, Chame, Pisang and Manang. With the rise in altitude, forests are replaced by open valleys, rocky cliffs, and snow covered mountains. Manang has a rest day to assist in acclimatization prior to crossing Thorong La Pass which is 5,416 meters, the highest point of the trek. The trail descends through the Kali Gandaki Valley to Jomsom after visiting the sacred temple of Muktinath, followed by a drive to Pokhara and finally a return to Kathmandu.

Thorong La Pass is one of the big highlights, however, the experience is much more than a mountain pass. Each leg of the journey brings new views, customary practices, and mountain villages, and it seems that every day of the trip is dissimilar to the previous one. From rivers and waterfalls to high altitude deserts and ancient villages, the route showcases the remarkable diversity of the Annapurna region.

At Nepal Wanderlust Treks, we handle all the details, such as transportation, permits, accommodation and experienced local guides. Our team will make it a safe, well planned and enjoyable trekking experience so that you can concentrate on the trip and the people you meet on your way.

To ensure safety, our Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary will include gradual uphill progression with an acclimatization day in Manang before reaching the peak of the route. The 14 Days Annapurna Circuit Trek is suitable for trekkers with a good level of fitness who want to complete Nepal’s classic mountain circuit. The Thorong La Pass Trek is a journey to remember in case you have the Himalayan Passes on your travel list.

The highway goes through rivers, terraced farms, waterfalls, and traditional villages, providing the view of rural life as the landscape slowly transforms into the mountainous landscape.

Towards the end of the afternoon, we will reach Jagat, a small village, encircled with green hills. Once we’ve checked in to our teahouse, you can rest and get ready to begin the first day trekking.

Trek from Jagat (1,290 m) to Dharapani (1,860 m)

The trail follows the Marsyangdi River through forests, stone staircases, and traditional villages. The road crosses a number of suspension bridges and areas such as Chamje, Tal and Karte and ascends to Dharapani. Waterfalls, rocky cliffs, and cultivated farmland provide diverse landscapes throughout the day.

Dharapani is the gateway to the Manang district, and a key point of the circuit. We will stay overnight in Dharapani and prepare for the gradual ascent into the higher mountain region.

Walking 6 to 7 hours
Altitude 1860m
04
Trek from Dharapani (1,860 m) to Chame (2,650 m)

The trail passes through pine, fir and oak forests. It follows the Marsyangdi River, through beautiful mountain landscapes and traditional villages. Small villages like Bagarchhap and Timang are worth visiting to get a glimpse of local culture and the sight of Lamjung Himal and Annapurna II is more appealing on a clear day.

After reaching Chame, the administrative centre of Manang District, there will be time to explore the village or relax in the natural hot spring nearby before settling into the teahouse for the evening.

Walking 5 to 6 hours
Altitude 2650m
05
Trek from Chame (2,650 m) to Pisang (3,250 m)

The trail leaves Chame and leads through forests to a broader valley bound by a series of Himalayan mountains. This trail goes around the dramatic Paungda Danda rock face and along the river through a calm woodland, with beautiful vistas of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak.

In the afternoon, we will reach Pisang, where we will have a chance to explore the culture of the Manang region in the traditional upper village and the local monastery. Overnight stay in a local teahouse.

The gradual climb rewards you with changing landscapes, traditional stone villages, and peaceful mountain scenery before descending into the broad Manang Valley.

07
Acclimatization Day at Manang and Visit to Gangapurna Glacier Lake (3,540 m)

Rest day at Manang also allows the body to adapt to the rising altitude prior to the Thorong La Pass. Rather than remaining inactive, a short hike to Gangapurna Glacier Lake provides gentle exercise while offering excellent views of the glacier, surrounding mountains, and the beautiful turquoise lake.

Once back in Manang spend the afternoon in the village, local bakeries, or learning about the mountain life. The ease of the schedule accustoms you to the elevations that will be higher in the following days.

08
Trek from Manang (3,519 m) to Yak Kharka (4,020 m)

Leaving Manang, the trail ascends gradually through alpine meadows and open hillsides where grazing yaks and blue sheep may occasionally be seen. As trees become scarce, the landscape changes into a dry mountain environment with wide views across the valley and surrounding peaks.

When you get to Yak Kharka, you will have ample time to rest and acclimatize. The reduced speed also aids the risk of altitude sickness and prepares against the next day of trek towards Thorong Phedi.

Walking 4 to 5 hours
Altitude 4020m
09
Trek from Yak Kharka (4,020 m) to Thorong Phedi (4,450 m)

Once you get to the teahouse, the afternoon is at your own pace to relax, keep hydrated, and gear up your equipment to the early morning start. A good night’s rest is essential before crossing Thorong La Pass the following morning.

Altitude 4450m
10
Trek from Thorong Phedi (4,450 m) to Muktinath (3,760 m) via Thorong La Pass (5,416 m)

The most challenging day of the Annapurna Circuit Trek begins early with a gradual ascent to Thorong La Pass, the highest elevation of the entire journey. At the peak, you’ll find vibrant prayer flags and sweeping views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges.

After pausing at the pass, the trail drops down through the dramatic mountain terrain before arriving at the sacred pilgrimage destination of Muktinath. Once there, you can explore the renowned temple and unwind after conquering one of Nepal’s most famous mountain crossings.

The village has narrow stone lanes, old houses and Buddhist monasteries that impart a special mood to the village making it a good place to have a short rest.

Leaving Kagbeni, the road goes along the Kali Gandaki River to Jomsom. By late afternoon, we will arrive at this busy mountain town, where you can relax and enjoy the comforts of a local teahouse after completing the trekking section.
