Overview of Helambu Trek

The Helambu Trek is a 9 day adventure into quiet mountain villages, thick forests and Buddhist monasteries, and scenic ridges north of Kathmandu. This journey is an adventure into the ancient homeland of the Hyolmo people, where local culture and centuries old Buddhist traditions continue to play an important role in everyday life. It is an excellent choice for travelers who want to experience the Himalayas without trekking to extreme altitudes.

The adventure starts with a brief trip to Sundarijal, which is followed by a visit to Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. It goes through forests of oak, pine and rhododendron, and then through villages: Chisapani, Kutumsang, Thadepati, Tarkeghyang and Sermathang. The scenery further changes as you ascend higher and instead of forested hills, you see open ridges with a view of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Ganesh Himal and the Jugal Himalayan range.

With Nepal Wanderlust Treks, every part of your journey is carefully organized to provide a safe and comfortable trekking experience. Our experienced guides will organize transportation, accommodation, permits and day logistics for you so that you can enjoy the trail and learn about the culture and traditions of the Helambu region.

Our Helambu Trek Itinerary includes a trek to Aama Yangri Peak, a popular viewpoint offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. The trail then descends through traditional settlements and eventually reaches Melamchi Bazaar where we drive back to Kathmandu.

The 9 Days Helambu Trek is suitable for beginners and experienced trekkers looking for a shorter Himalayan holiday. If you are looking for mountain scenery, local culture, and comfortable trekking days, this is an excellent short trek near Kathmandu.

Spring brings with it rhododendron flowers of all colors to the woods and autumn brings a fresh mountain air and good sightlines following the monsoon.

The trekkers also like winter when the trails are quieter, but mornings and evenings are chilly, particularly in the area around Thadepati. In the lower forests, the monsoon season is characterized by frequent rainfall, muddy tracks, and the occasional presence of leeches. The most comfortable trekking period is autumn or spring following our Itinerary of Helambu Trek.
