Overview of Tsum Valley Trek
Tsum Valley is a remote destination in the northern Himalayas bordering Tibet, a quiet trekking spot that has maintained generations-old Buddhist culture, remote villages and mountain views. The Tsum Valley Trek will take you through an area that is not visited by many tourists as compared to most of the popular trekking trails in Nepal and this makes the Tsum Valley Trek a great option to those who want a more serene Himalayan experience.
The journey begins with a drive from Kathmandu before following the Budhi Gandaki River into the Manaslu region. As the trail branches into Tsum Valley, the landscape becomes quieter and more remote, and the influence of Tibetan Buddhism becomes more visible. The valley is filled with prayer flags, mani walls, chortens, and traditional monasteries, while local villages continue to follow customs that have been preserved for generations.
The trek offers beautiful views of Ganesh Himal, Sringi Himal, and Boudha Himal. As we pass through villages such as Chumling, Chekampar, and Nile, we will experience the daily life, culture, and traditions of the Tsumba people. A visit to Mu Gompa is another highlight of the trek, where you can learn about centuries old Buddhist traditions and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Essential Information - Tsum Valley Trek
Best Time for Tsum Valley Trek
The Tsum Valley Trek can be best experienced in spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November). These seasons tend to have predictable weather, favorable conditions, and clear sight of the other mountains around. The lower trails bloom with rhododendrons in spring and offer fresh mountain air and great visibility after the monsoon season in autumn.
The winter is right to the trekkers who are ready to face the cold weather and the snow sometimes in the upper villages. Monsoon season, June-August, is usually characterized by heavy rain, muddy trails, and potential road delays, which complicate trekking.
Tsum Valley Trek Difficulty
The Tsum Valley Trek is a moderate trek that is suitable for trekkers with a reasonable level of fitness. The majority of the days are 5 to 7 hours of walking on forest trails, stone staircases, suspension bridges, and mountain paths. Though prior trekking experience is useful, it is not necessary when you prepare well in advance.
The highest point of the trek is Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 m (12,139 ft). Our schedule gives us time to steadily increase in altitude, which will allow your body to adapt. Walking at a steady pace, drinking enough water and following your guide’s advice will help make your trek more comfortable.
Altitude and Acclimatization
The highest point of the Tsum Valley Trek Itinerary is Mu Gompa at approximately 3,700 m (12,139 ft) above sea level. Although this altitude is lower than many popular Himalayan treks, some trekkers may still experience mild symptoms as they gain elevation.
We will have a gradual increase in altitude in our itinerary to minimize chances of altitude sickness. Breaks, hydration, healthy food, and reporting to your guide when you feel unwell are some of the measures that help to make your trekking safe and enjoyable.
Permits for Tsum Valley Trek
The Tsum Valley Trek Nepal takes place in a restricted area, so special permits are required before starting the trek. For this itinerary, trekkers need a Tsum Valley Restricted Area Permit and a Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP). If the trek is combined with the Manaslu Circuit Trek, an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) is also required.
Nepal Wanderlust Treks will arrange all the necessary permits before your trek begins. All you need is to present a valid passport, passport sized photographs and your traveling information. We will handle the paperwork and you will have an easy and carefully managed adventure.
Travel Insurance
Anyone who is taking part in the Tsum Valley Trek is highly encouraged to purchase travel insurance. The high altitude trekking, emergency treatment, cancellation of the trip, and helicopter evacuation should be covered in your insurance policy in case it is necessary throughout the trek.
Even though serious emergencies are rare, weather conditions and the remote site of the valley may make rescue activities costly without appropriate insurance. Before travelling to Nepal, make sure your policy provides adequate coverage for trekking activities up to 4,000 meters.
